Background to this album

The studio album Tinker Tailor Worker Whaler is a collection of songs written by Cold Flame band leader Pat Rowbottom. During 1989 / early 1990 Pat recorded several songs at Manor Park Studios in Glossop with a number of local musicians including Cold Flame drummer Vince Walton and keyboard player and studio engineer Dave Forward. Dave happened to have his own studio - Basement Studios - and seizing the opportunity, Pat began recording for what might have been Cold Flame's first studio album. 'It was a great opportunity to learn about how things work in a studio setting so I was really pleased to take up Dave's offer. I think Dave also saw an opportunity of working more closely with someone who reflected a very different musical background and approach so perhaps we both learnt something new during the sessions.'

The sessions were indeed productive with a number of Cold Flame songs recorded but some of the other material emerging from these sessions had little if any blues content at all as Pat explored other music genres particularly instrumental folk music. Another influence on the final product was an inability to house a real drum kit within the very small confines of the studio, so Dave F extended his studio duties providing some drum programming as well as keys and synth parts which saw the overall sound shift away to an extent from blues rock. Pat also ended up playing some keys and guitar parts whilst session guitarist Jon Dean also featured. Some tunes, taken from Cold Flame's live repertoire at this time were recorded - Skid Row, Highlander, Memories of You and End of the Line. In addition, there are a number of vocal and instrumental tracks displaying the folkier side of Pat's songwriting and there is a general theme both musical and lyrical running through the material which is loosely based on 'the working man' both from a modern and historical perspective. During the spring of 2007 Pat teamed up with Cold Flame's keyboard player at the time - Davyd Simpson to revisit this album and remaster all the tracks taken from the original mini disc masters as well as some of the material recorded the previous year at Manor Park Studios. Artist Julian Homer designed a new album cover based on the original artwork by Lee Robinson. The finished product - an extended version of the album including bonus songs, was re-released in September 2007 and is now available direct from the band see elsewhere on the website for details.

The album ' Tinker Tailor Worker Whaler' is available via the band website Shop.
